About

Street performance or busking is the act of performing in public places for gratuities. In many countries the rewards are generally in the form of money but other gratuities such as food, drink or gifts may be given. Street performance is practiced all over the world and dates back to antiquity. People engaging in this form of public art may be referred to as street performers, buskers, street musicians, or troubadours.

These public spaces are areas of private developments which are visually prominent during daylight hours or freely accessible to the public and, publicly seen or accessible structures or areas which fall under the City of Cape Town’s jurisdiction. Public space is not only public land but also includes sites and settings of public life owned by the state or owned commercially.

Art in public spaces is important, not only as political expression, but as an act in and of itself. It can be a reminder of our humanity as we walk down city streets.

The purpose of this project was to promote this type of performance genre and provide buskers with an opportunity to showcase their talent.
