About

Waste management is a challenge across South Africa, illegal dumping is found in various areas across all the metropolitan areas as these areas are overcrowded. Though the City of Cape Town has several waste management strategies and services in place for dealing with waste and illegal dumping, illegal dumping continues to be one of the biggest challenges the City faces. It costs the City R350 million every year to clean up illegal dumping. As such, it is evident that community awareness raising, and education needs to be centralized on behavior change, perceptions, and attitudes towards illegal dumping in order to change the prevailing selfish attitudes and behaviors concerning illegal dumping.

There are more than 21drop facilities across the city, built to assist the communities to dispose of their waste material that cannot be put in the refuse bins or blue plastic bags in case of the informal areas. These drop off site are aimed to be located within a

7km radius of each community.

Annual community programmes are implemented at various institutes and on different levels to engage with communities educating and encouraging them to change the manner in which they deal with waste.
